The Church of Satan

The Satanic Temple is an active philosophical religious organization founded in 2013. It does not recognize any concept of the supernatural but instead promotes a negative response to fundamental religious beliefs. The Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America foundation states that the Satanic Temple has opened a new abortion facility and is sending abortion drugs through the mail, avoiding legal issues by claiming that abortion is one of their “religious rites.” The existence of organized satanic churches like the Satanic Temple is not new, but the unorganized church of Satan has always been around, making these claims about Christian beliefs:

PRAYER – “Prayer is useless and distracts people from useful activity. No god ever answered any prayer at any time, nor ever will.” (From a poster distributed by Madalyn O’Hair.)

DEALING WITH OTHERS – Satanists claim that “survival of the fittest” offers a more fulfilling and practical answer to everyone’s needs.

MORAL CONDUCT – “Practice with joy the ‘seven deadly Christian sins.’ Engage in sex freely in accordance with your needs, be it heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, or with one or more consenting adults.” (Frank Zindler in a lecture at Ohio State in 1995 and in the American Atheist Magazine, which he edited from 1995 to 2009.)

The Christian Response to the church of Satan:

PRAYER – God’s answer to prayer is usually spiritual, not physical. 12 Step programs work, and prayer molds personality and attitude. James 5:16 explains this, and James 4:1-3 tells us why prayers for the physical are not answered. Isaiah 55:8 and John 9:3 give a practical purpose for prayers.

DEALING WITH OTHERS – What happens when you are no longer “the fittest”? Do any of us want to be discounted when we get old?

MORAL CONDUCT – What are the results of practicing the “seven deadly Christian sins”? What effect does immorality have on our kids, mates, parents, and society as a whole? How does an immoral lifestyle give a purpose to our existence?

We live at a time when over 40% of the population answers “none” when asked about their religious affiliation. You can’t be a “none.” You have only two choices – either be a Christian or be a member of the church of Satan. Read Matthew 12:30 (or Luke 11:23) and think about what you really want to use as a guide to your life.

Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) was an anti-slavery campaigner and a suffragist who was instrumental in obtaining women’s right to vote. She was honored by having her image on the U.S. silver dollar and half dollar minted from 1979 to 1981 and again in 1999.

After School Satan Clubs

One of the consequences of the rejection of God and Christianity in the United States has been the success of the Satanic Temple. This group, active worldwide, is headquartered in Salem, Massachusetts, and growing in influence in the United States. They have launched a nationwide campaign to bring After School Satan Clubs to elementary schools.

The Satanic Temple claims 700,000 members and has had several successes in opposing Christianity. Recently they gave the invocation at the San Marcos City Council, conducted a Los Angeles Satanic Mass, and administered “un-baptisms” in Boston. In addition, local Satanic Temples have engaged in Bible burning, drinking a blood-like fluid from a cup, and celebrating the sacrifice of goats.

The After School Satan Clubs offer a coloring book published by the Satanic Temple, which engages children in satanic rituals and constructing a pentagram, the official symbol of the Church of Satan. Clubs. The Washington Post commented, “The Satanic Temple is determined to give young students a choice: Jesus or Satan.”

The United States Supreme Court ruled in 2001 that elementary schools could not stop the evangelical “Good News Club” from hosting after school club meetings. The Satanic Temple is using that decision to justify having clubs that promote Satanic beliefs. After School Satan Clubs have reportedly been started in Utah, California, Ohio, Washington, Illinois, and Oregon elementary schools.

The message of the Satanic Temple ridicules Christianity, belief in God, and the Bible’s moral teachings. It seems this group would qualify as a “hate group” which could be legally challenged, but that will probably never happen. Nevertheless, Christians must be aware of this threat. Parents and local church leaders need to educate themselves on what is being taught in the schools and be ready to oppose satanic teaching if it comes to their communities.

Atheist and Satanic Seasonal Displays

The apparent solution to all of the lawsuits and negative publicity about Christmas displays on public property is to allow atheist and Satanic seasonal displays. In South Bend, Indiana, where our ministry is located, the Northern Indiana Atheists have erected a display titled “Oh Come All Ye Faithless.” On the grounds of the Michigan Capitol a Satanic group called “The West Michigan Friends of the Satanic Temple” is attempting to repeat the “Snaketivity” display that was erected last year by the Satanic Temple’s Detroit chapter. It featured a red snake coiled around a black cross with a pentagram on it with a sign that read “The Greatest Gift is Knowledge.”

Our ministry agrees with the free speech of all of these displays, even though we disagree with their belief system. There is an adage that says “I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to my death your right to say it.” As a veteran, I firmly support that statement.

I agree with the Northern Indiana Atheists that there should be a separation of Church and State. It is interesting that this atheist group is a non-profit and thus takes advantage of the same rights that churches have. Jesus said to render to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. The government has no right to interfere with religious freedom or to persecute religions that are trying to serve and help others. Unfortunately, government restrictions and attempts to control religious belief are increasing in America as we have shown in our posts during the past year.

The view that knowledge is a great gift is not contestable. Calling it “the greatest gift” is an opinion that is poorly supported. However, Proverbs 8 talks about wisdom and Romans 1:18-32 extols the importance of knowledge. Atheist attacks on the Bible and the concept of God are demonstrations of bias, hatred, ignorance, and prejudice – all of which fly in the face of knowledge. This ministry is an educational program trying to present knowledge that can be helpful in addressing the problems in the world and individual lives. Atheist and satanic seasonal displays do nothing to solve those problems.

These displays remind us of Paul’s discourse to the intellectuals in Athens in Acts 17:21-33. He said, “I found an altar with this inscription ‘to the unknown god.’ Whom, therefore, you ignorantly worship, Him I declare to you.” More sharing and listening on the part of all of us will result in less conflict and more cooperation. We need to address the real problems humanity faces in today’s world, and Christianity does that.
